Embracing the Radiance: China's Lixia (Beginning of Summer)

As the sun reaches the celestial longitude of 45 degrees around May 5th–7th, China welcomes Lixia (立夏), 

the solar term marking the official arrival of summer. Rooted in agrarian traditions, this 2,000-year-old festival celebrates vitality, growth, and harmony with nature, offering a vibrant glimpse into Chinese cultural heritage.

One iconic custom is the "weighing ritual" (chengren), where children and elders step onto scales to record their weight. 

Symbolizing a wish for robust health during the sweltering months, communities believe gaining weight in summer wards off ailments.

 Another beloved tradition involves "Lixia eggs"—hard-boiled eggs dyed red or threaded into colorful silk pouches. 

Parents hang these around children’s necks to signify resilience, while lively egg fights emerge as playful competitions to test whose shell remains unbroken.

Food plays a starring role. Families prepare seasonal dishes featuring cherries, green plums, and tender bamboo shoots, believed to boost energy. 

In southern China, five-colored glutinous rice (black, red, yellow, white, and green) graces tables, each hue representing natural elements and warding off "summer laziness." 

Some regions host "tasting freshness" (changxin) banquets, savoring newly harvested crops to honor Earth’s bounty.

Beyond rituals, Lixia embodies philosophical wisdom. Ancient texts link summer to the fire element and the heart organ, 

advising people to nurture calmness and avoid excessive exertion. Parks brim with residents practicing tai chi at dawn or sipping chrysanthemum tea to balance inner heat.
